The technical infrastructure was provided by local grassroot organisations that built up a wireless internet network in the center areas of Berlin ( http://freifunk.net ).
The picture shows the ‚meshcube‘, a palm-size Linux RISC computer with two separate wireless channels that was used to relay the signal from directional antennas to the Mars rocks beach site.
